Illustrated detail for typical hip rafters
Hip Rafters on equal pitch roofs will align at a 45 degree angle from all four corners reguardless of hip rafter pitch.
Cutting the top plumb line for your typical hip can be laid out in this detail using your framing square set on 4x17 or 13.2627 degrees.
Hip drop in the plumb line dimension is required here and on our example of 4x12 pitch it should be lowered by 3/16". This will allow the top corners of the hip rafter to be level with the top of the common rafters.
Even though the hip rafter is setting on a perfect 45 degree angle the side cut or cheek cut angles differ slightly. We'll get into that later on.
